Today, I’m thankful for conversation. Just regular, plain old conversation. Not conversation with a point. Not counseling that is trying to get somewhere. Not lectures that have a goal. I’m thankful for conversation. I’m thankful because my son and I were having a conversation over the weekend. Honestly, I was complaining about stuff. He asked a question just off the cuff. He had no ulterior motive. He wasn’t trying to get me to think about anything. He just wanted information. However, in that unguarded moment, his simple question made me step back and take stock of the situation I was complaining about. I realized the situation was not worth the grief I was bringing to it. I think it is going to be one of the biggest life-changing moments I have experienced. But it all happened because instead of both of us being plugged into our mp3 players, we were having a conversation. Oh yeah, and I’m thankful for my son, who asked the question.
My goal today is to listen and talk. My goal is to have more conversations and to be present in the conversations I do have. I want to stay aware of the great things that are said to me. I wonder how many other life-changing moments I’ve missed because I just wasn’t paying attention.
Glorious God, thank You for the life-changing moments that come up in the mundane, day-to-day interactions. May I never take them for granted again. Open my eyes and my heart to all of them. I am all Yours today; do with me as You will.
